Influenza, or more commonly known as “the flu” is a very serious disease that if left untreated can lead to hospitalization or even in severe cases: death. The flu virus is able to adapt, making the flu season different every year. The typical “flu season” begins during the month of October and can last as long as May in some instances. During these months, the flu viruses are spreading at higher rates in the U.S. population, making it even more crucial to get your annual flu vaccine. There are common myths suggesting not to receive an annual flu shot, however, AFC Urgent Care is able to provide the facts behind these myths to ensure patients have the healthiest flu season possible.
Myth 1: You can catch the flu from a flu shot.
No. Flu vaccines are made of dead particles of the virus, and because it is not living the virus cannot affect you. This common misconception may arise from the fact that your body takes about two weeks to form the necessary antibodies for the vaccine to protect you. So, if a person contracts a cold or the flu before or right after having the shot administered, the vaccine is not the cause of their illness.
Myth 2: It’s better to get the flu rather than a flu shot.
NO! The flu can potentially be a serious or even life-threatening disease and should not be taken lightly. Young children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes are especially at risk to becoming infected. Any flu infection has the potential to carry a risk of serious complications, including hospitalization or even death, which is why receiving your flu shot is safer than risking illness to obtain immune protection.
Myth 3: Flu vaccines are safe for pregnant women and small children.
Yes! According to the CDC, women during any stage of their pregnancy are able to receive a flu shot. In fact, when a pregnant woman gets influenza, they are at an increased risk for complications and even hospitalization from the disease. Additionally, a woman receiving a flu vaccination during pregnancy can help protect their child from the flu during their first six months of life by “passing” the protection to the unborn child. After six months all children are able to receive the flu shot, unless they’ve previously had an allergic reaction to the vaccination.
